Direto da Filadélfia, o FREIGHT TRAIN foi formado em 1968 pelo guitarrista Rick Shaffer e deixou este raríssimo “Just The Beginning”, lançado em 1971 pelo pequeno selo Fly By Nite. A banda se separaria em 1973 e, alguns anos depois, Shaffer, Jim Peters e Tommy Geddes se reuniriam novamente, formando o The Reds ao lado do tecladista Bruce Cohen.
O disco traz uma ótima coleção de clássicos do Chicago blues, tocados com uma pegada mais pesada e elétrica, misturando a escola americana de Paul Butterfield com aquele maravilhoso British Blues do final dos anos 60. Em vários momentos lembra Fleetwood Mac da fase Peter Green, Chicken Shack e os primeiros Cream.
No repertório aparecem músicas associadas a Little Walter, T-Bone Walker, Sonny Boy Williamson, Willie Dixon, Magic Sam, Jimmy Reed e Peter Green, incluindo as excelentes “I Loved Another Woman” e “Rollin' Man”.
Blues cru, guitarras afiadas, longos solos e uma boa dose de blues rock/heavy psych. Raridade americana muito recomendada para quem gosta do blues britânico mais pesado do início dos anos 70!!

Straight out of Philadelphia, FREIGHT TRAIN was formed in 1968 by guitarist Rick Shaffer and left behind this rare gem, “Just The Beginning”, released in 1971 on the small Fly By Nite label. The band broke up in 1973, and a few years later Shaffer, Jim Peters and Tommy Geddes reunited, joining keyboardist Bruce Cohen to form The Reds.
The album is a great collection of Chicago blues classics, played with a heavier and more electric approach, blending the American influence of Paul Butterfield with the great British Blues sound of the late '60s. At times it recalls Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack and early Cream.
The repertoire includes songs associated with Little Walter, T-Bone Walker, Sonny Boy Williamson, Willie Dixon, Magic Sam, Jimmy Reed and Peter Green, including the excellent “I Loved Another Woman” and “Rollin' Man.”
Raw blues, sharp guitars, extended solos and a good dose of blues rock/heavy psych. A highly recommended American rarity for fans of the heavier British blues sound of the early '70s!!
