The Lost Studio Album / 1969 é um documento particularmente interessante da transformação do White Lightning em Lightning. Tudo começou em Minneapolis, em 1968, quando o guitarrista Tom “Zippy” Caplan, recém-saído do cultuado The Litter, juntou-se ao baixista Woody Woodrich para formar um power trio fortemente inspirado pelo Cream. Depois da breve passagem do baterista Gar Johnson, Mick Stanhope assumiu bateria e vocais.
O White Lightning chegou rapidamente às rádios locais com o compacto “Of Paupers and Poets” / “William”, lançado originalmente pelo selo Hexagon. O disco entrou no Top 10 da rádio KDWB em fevereiro de 1969 e posteriormente foi escolhido pela Atco para distribuição nacional.
Durante 1969, porém, a banda começou a mudar. Ronn Roberts entrou como segundo guitarrista, Mick Stanhope deixou a bateria para concentrar-se nos vocais e Bernie Pershey assumiu a bateria. Três músicas são especialmente interessantes para comparar com o LP posterior: “Prelude to Opus IV”, “1930” e “Freedom”. Todas seriam regravadas para o álbum Lightning de 1970, mas as versões encontradas aqui são diferentes, permitindo ouvir a evolução dos arranjos antes das sessões profissionais da P.I.P.
O disco reúne dez faixas. Oito pertencem à fase Lightning de 1969, enquanto “Only Love” e “William Tell” remetem ao período White Lightning. Na própria contracapa aparecem ainda alguns detalhes deliciosos para colecionadores: Barbara Hess participa nos backing vocals de “Just Let the World Roll on By” e “Ground Hog”, e Woody Woodrich canta “Only Love”.
A maior curiosidade fica para “William Tell”. A faixa que encerra o LP foi recuperada de um único acetato, digitalizado e cuidadosamente tratado para diminuir os estalos e ruídos. É mais um exemplo de como parte dessa história esteve muito perto de desaparecer.

A LITTLE MORE ABOUT THE LOST STUDIO ALBUM / 1969
The Lost Studio Album / 1969 is a particularly interesting document of the transformation of White Lightning into Lightning. It all began in Minneapolis in 1968, when guitarist Tom “Zippy” Caplan, fresh from his departure from the cult band The Litter, joined bassist Woody Woodrich to form a power trio heavily inspired by Cream. After the brief involvement of drummer Gar Johnson, Mick Stanhope took over drums and vocals.
White Lightning quickly gained local radio attention with the single “Of Paupers and Poets” / “William”, originally released on the Hexagon label. The record reached the Top 10 on KDWB radio in February 1969 and was later picked up by Atco for national distribution.
During 1969, however, the band began to change. Ronn Roberts joined as second guitarist, Mick Stanhope left the drums to concentrate on vocals, and Bernie Pershey took over behind the kit. With five musicians, two guitars and an increasing focus on original material, White Lightning became simply Lightning.
Most of the recordings collected on this LP come from that transitional period. They were made before the official album released by P.I.P. in 1970, capturing a band that was still raw and exploring a sound that blended heavy psych, hard rock, fuzz, psychedelia and some progressive tendencies.
Three tracks are especially interesting when compared with the later LP: “Prelude to Opus IV,” “1930” and “Freedom.” All three would be re-recorded for the 1970 Lightning album, but the versions included here are different, allowing us to hear how the arrangements evolved before the professional P.I.P. sessions.
The album contains ten tracks. Eight belong to the 1969 Lightning period, while “Only Love” and “William Tell” date back to the White Lightning phase. The back cover also preserves a few great details for collectors: Barbara Hess provides backing vocals on “Just Let the World Roll on By” and “Ground Hog,” while Woody Woodrich sings lead on “Only Love.”
The biggest curiosity is “William Tell.” The track that closes the album was recovered from a single acetate, which was digitized and carefully treated to reduce clicks and surface noise. It is yet another example of how close part of this history came to disappearing forever.
All of this material remained officially unreleased for nearly three decades. Only in 1996 did American Sound Records issue The Lost Studio Album / 1969, catalog number AS 1003, in a limited pressing of 750 vinyl copies.
The following year, much of this material appeared again on the CD White Lightning Strikes Twice 1968–1969, which brought together recordings from both the White Lightning power-trio period and the later Lightning lineup.
More than just a collection of unreleased studio leftovers, this LP captures the exact moment when White Lightning moved beyond its power-trio roots and began developing the heavier, more elaborate identity of Lightning. A true lost document from the Minneapolis underground!!
